ISC Cloud’12 Panel to Examine Challenges of Moving HPC to the Cloud

ISC Cloud’12 Panel to Examine Challenges of Moving HPC to the Cloud

Reduced Advance Registration Rate Ends Sept. 15 for Sept. 24-25 Conference

MANNHEIM, Germany, Sept 10, 2012– For many HPC users thinking of moving their workload to the cloud, the idea of having a user-friendly “front end” and no longer having to concern themselves with the back end of computing is a strong incentive. But a panel of experts speaking at the Sept. 24-25 ISC Cloud’12 conference in Mannheim will explain that a number of important considerations still loom behind a move to the cloud.

Online registration is now open for ISC Cloud’12 and there are two ways to save. General advance registration, at a savings of 50 Euros, is open through Saturday, Sept. 15. If you attended ISC’12 and purchased a full-conference passport, you are entitled to 25 percent off the ISC Cloud’12 pass. To register for ISC Cloud’12, please use the code cloud4isc-2012.

Paolo Balboni, who is the founding partner at ICT Legal Consulting, and Director of the European Privacy Association, Cloud Computing Sector Director and responsible for Foreign Affairs of Italian Institute for Privacy, will talk about the Legal Aspects of Cloud Computing in a panel on HPC Cloud Challenges. According to Balboni, prior to migrating to the cloud, companies should carefully verify the data privacy and data security policy of cloud service providers and choose the one that offers a high level of data protection. Moreover, companies should also regularly monitor the data protection compliance of the selected cloud service provider and look into limitations and exclusions of liability clauses. In fact, not paying attention to these issues could leave the company – not the cloud provider – legally and financially responsible for any data leaks or losses.

This panel will examine the potential obstacles to cloud adoption, such as security and trust, compliance, outsourcing, performance, virtualization, pricing, payment model, software licenses, choice of service provider or private cloud builder, network bandwidth, and integration of all of these into existing business or research processes.

In addition to Balboni, the panel will include:

“In putting together the conference program for ISC Cloud’12, we wanted to create a meeting that provides a comprehensive perspective on cloud computing and we are pleased to offer this panel examining a wide range of issues,” said Wolfgang Gentzsch, ISC Cloud’12 General Chair.

The complete conference program is now online.
