I'm excited to share Ayodhya, because it is a city that rewards timing more than almost any other I've planned around. I spent decades dressing shop windows, and the one lesson that stuck: the same display reads completely differently at noon and at dusk. Ayodhya is like that. The temple town I send you to in a cool November evening is not the one a visitor meets at 1 PM in June. This guide is honest about queues, heat, crowds and costs - exactly what to do, and when.
When to Go: Reading Ayodhya's Calendar First
Ayodhya's year has three registers. October to February is the comfortable one (roughly 10-24°C / 50-75°F), when every site is walkable and the evening aarti feels unhurried. Ram Navami brings a 9-day mela - in 2027 the mela runs from 7 April, with Navami on 15 April and the extraordinary Surya Tilak, a shaft of noon sunlight on Ram Lalla, best watched from inside the complex by 11 AM. The Ram Leela Mahotsav runs 11-20 October 2026, and Deepotsav, the city at its most theatrical, takes over 6-11 November 2026 (my own pick - book by early October, and keep a full day of slack in your plans either side).Start Where Tradition Starts: Hanuman Garhi at 6 AM
The traditional sequence is Hanuman Garhi first, then Ram Mandir - Hanuman is Ayodhya's guardian, and the order also happens to beat the queues. The 10th-century hilltop fortress temple opens at 5 AM; arrive 6-7 AM and the climb of 76 stone steps (10-15 minutes, with a paalki service at the base for elderly visitors) is calm rather than a crush. The detail most people walk past: the gold-ornamented 6-inch Bal Hanuman idol seated on Anjani Mata's lap, one of the rarest depictions in North India. Ask at the temple's own visitor desk about the day's aarti timings - they change with the season. 1 Spot On 38000 Vaidehi Bhawan

For an early-start pilgrimage on a budget, this simple family-run option sits 2 km from Ram Mandir, with air-conditioned family rooms, a 24-hour front desk and reception in both English and Hindi (expect the basics only - luggage storage and room service, no restaurant).
Ram Janmabhoomi: E-Passes, Queues and the Bhog Window
The Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir, consecrated on 22 January 2024, is built in the Nagara style in pink sandstone, and the Ram Darbar on the first floor is now open. Entry is free, and so is the Sugam E-Pass at online.srjbtkshetra.org - pre-book it and the walk-in queue drops from hours to 15-30 minutes (on peak days the general queue runs 3-5 hours). No phones or bags inside; use the cloak rooms. Doors open at 7 AM, and the temple pauses for the bhog offering 12-2 PM - my advice, learned the hard way once at a midday shrine in Tirupati: treat that break as your lunch slot, not your frustration hour. 2 Clarks Inn Express Ayodhya

For families doing the darshan-and-rest rhythm, this family hotel works well: air-conditioned rooms with work desks, an Indian restaurant serving brunch through high tea, plus a sun terrace and outdoor fireplace for the post-temple wind-down. It sits 4 km from the airport.
Ram Ki Paidi: The 14 Ghats and the 7 PM Aarti
Every evening around 7 PM, priests at Ram Ki Paidi - a series of 14 stepped ghats on the Sarayu - perform the Saryu Aarti with multi-tiered brass lamps and conch shells. It is modelled on Varanasi's Ganga Aarti, smaller in scale and easier to reach a good position at: arrive by 6:30 PM. Boat rides on the Sarayu run sunrise to sunset for roughly ₹100-₹300 ($1.20-$3.60) per person. For the quietest hour on the water, go to Guptar Ghat at sunrise instead - it is the composed, half-empty version of the same riverfront. 3 Sterling Rampath Ayodhya

After an evening on the ghats, I like a room with a window, and Sterling Rampath's air-conditioned rooms come with city views (ask for one away from the road - worth the request). There's a restaurant with Indian and vegetarian options, tea and coffee makers in every room, a 24-hour front desk and free parking. check rates on Booking.com ↗
The Quieter Rooms: Kanak Bhawan, Sita Ki Rasoi and Gulab Bari
The middle of the day is for the smaller, quieter sites. Kanak Bhawan, 300 m from the Ram Mandir, has a gold-adorned interior and is usually calm after the morning rush. Sita Ki Rasoi and Dashrath Bhavan sit 400 m away each - 45 minutes combined. Nageshwarnath, Ayodhya's oldest Shiva temple, is 500 m from the main complex. Then, if the heat permits, take a cab (₹200-₹300 / $2.40-$3.60) 3 km out to Gulab Bari, an 18th-century Nawab mausoleum set in a rose garden, open sunrise to sunset. These are the hours when Ayodhya feels like a city people actually live in. 4 Ira By Orchid, Ayodhya

For a full-day loop of the smaller sites, this city hotel is built for it: a tour desk and concierge to arrange the cab, two restaurants, a fitness room, and generous breakfasts from continental to South Indian vegetarian. Rooms have tea and coffee makers, baths and sofas.
Deepotsav Nights: Lakhs of Diyas on the Sarayu
Deepotsav, 6-11 November 2026 with Diwali on Sunday 8 November, is when Ayodhya becomes the scene it is always describing: a target of 28 lakh earthen diyas across 51 Sarayu ghats, chasing the 2,617,215-lamp Guinness record set in 2025. Expect the symbolic arrival of Ram, Sita and Lakshman, laser and drone shows, mass aarti at sunset and Ram Lila through the city (hotels fill by early October - book the moment dates are confirmed). Around it sit the walking pilgrimages: the Chaudahkosi Parikrama on 18 November, the ~15 km Panchkoshi on 20 November, and the Kartik Purnima snan on 24 November. 5 Hotel Krinoscco Ayodhya

Safety, Queues and Culture: What I Tell First-Timers
Ayodhya is welcoming, but it is a working pilgrimage city - plan like one of the pilgrims, not apart from them. 6 Hotel O Manglam Guest House
