I'm genuinely excited to share this stretch of Mumbai, because most families head straight south and miss how much sits within reach of Inorbit Mall in Malad West. An honest orienting note: a mall is a fine rainy-day fallback with children, but it isn't the reason to come, so I've organised this guide by where you sleep. You'll find four bases (sea side, Juhu, Versova and Gorai), the national park and pagoda days that suit each, the festival calendar and a dedicated safety section. My own favourite pick is the pagoda at Gorai, and I'll explain why.
Why your base matters near Inorbit Mall
Malad sits in the P/North ward, and the mall is your anchor for three quite different directions. South lies the Juhu and Versova belt, with Metro Line 1 and the city's small theatres. On the sea side of the ward are Madh and Aksa Beach. North are Borivali and Gorai, home to the forest and the pagoda. (Mumbai traffic can turn any ride into 10 minutes or an hour, so choose your base by your main plans, not by the mall.)
If you'd like to compare beyond my four picks, browse all accommodations in Mumbai.
Getting there and getting around
- Airports: Mumbai now has two, BOM and Navi Mumbai (NMI), a long way apart. BOM Terminal 1 stopped flights on 25 October 2026, so check your ticket. A free hourly shuttle links the two.
- Taxis and autos: black-and-yellow taxis start at Rs 33 for the first 1.5 km, then Rs 21.90 per km. Autos start at Rs 27, then Rs 18.22 per km.
- Metro: Line 1 runs Versova to Ghatkopar, 05:30 to 23:50. Lines 2A and 7 run north along the western suburbs.
- Trains: avoid weekday rush hours with children. Women-only compartments are marked on the platform.
- Buses: BEST starts at Rs 10 (non-AC), Rs 12 (AC). Cheap, slow, and a squishy gamble at rush hour.
- Ask for help: call the Ministry of Tourism helpline, 1800 11 1363, and ask which airport and route suit your hotel's area.
Malad and Madh: the sea-side base
The P/North ward covers Malad, Madh, Marve and Aksa Beach, so this is the sea side of your mall base. Beaches here are for paddling and snacks (I'd keep little ones at ankle depth, since many Mumbai beaches have no warning flags or lifeguard equipment). The big family draw is Essel World amusement park, 7 km from the hotel below.
1 The Retreat Hotel & Convention Centre
★ 5
Stay here for space and an on-site pool; you trade the Juhu café-and-theatre strip for resort-style self-containment. It is 3 km from Aksa Beach and 1 km from St. Bonaventure Church. There's an outdoor swimming pool, a garden, a games room, a fitness centre and barbecue facilities, so a rainy afternoon needn't need a taxi. Family rooms are air-conditioned, with a seating area, desk, flat-screen TV, electric kettle and minibar. Dining includes Waters Edge Pool side restaurant, Tangerine Café and Oriental Bowl, plus room service. (There is also a bar, the Sunken Bar, so it isn't toddler territory everywhere.) Safety notes: 24-hour front desk, access facilities for physically challenged guests, free parking. View this property ->
Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Kanheri: the field-notebook day
This is where my notebook habit pays off. In my window-dressing years I tallied what a crowd actually stopped for; now I let children tally species. Sanjay Gandhi National Park, a forest inside the city at Borivali East, holds leopards, 251 bird species and about 150 butterfly species. Kanheri's 109 Buddhist caves lie 7 km inside. (Don't promise a toddler a leopard; promise a tally sheet.)
- Lion and tiger safari: Rs 750 adults, Rs 375 children, about 1 hour. The Van Rani mini train and the Kanheri bus are Rs 300 each.
- Most activities close on Mondays, Kanheri excepted. Best from October to May.
- Guided trails need forest department permission, and the caves take a separate ASI ticket.
- Safety: leopards live here, so stay on marked routes.
Juhu and Versova: culture, beach and metro
Juhu and Versova fall in the K/West ward. The design detail most visitors walk past is Prithvi Theatre: a small thrust-stage playhouse, so no seat is far from the actors. The box office runs 13:00 to 21:00 and is closed Mondays; I'd turn up as it opens for the shortest queue. Metro Line 1 starts at Versova. During Ganesh Chaturthi, Juhu Beach is an immersion point, so expect crowds. Two hotels suit this zone.
2 Hotel West Blue
★ 3
Stay here for Juhu's theatre and temple circuit: ISKCON, Prithvi Theatre and the Bombay Exhibition Centre are each 4 km away. You trade resort sprawl for a practical city base. Family rooms have private bathrooms, air-conditioning, free WiFi, a work desk, TV and soundproofing (useful, though no wall fully beats Mumbai traffic). There's a lift, 24-hour front desk, housekeeping and full-day security. Free on-site private parking, room service, breakfast in the room and a tour desk are included. The hotel states it is 6 km from the airport. Compare it with other family-friendly hotels near Inorbit Mall.
3 Fabhotel Hans Residency
★ 3
Stay here to be closest to Versova Beach, just 2.3 km away; you trade a pool and garden for an easy hop to the sand and the metro. ISKCON is 3.9 km and Prithvi Theatre 4.3 km. Family rooms are air-conditioned with private bathrooms, free WiFi, a seating area, TV and wardrobe. The on-site family-friendly restaurant serves Indian cuisine, and there's a lounge, lift and room service. Safety notes: 24-hour front desk and full-day security. (Parking is paid, so budget for it.) The hotel states it is 8 km from the airport. (Booking.com)
Gorai and the Global Vipassana Pagoda
My favourite design fact in the whole area: the Global Vipassana Pagoda, modelled on Yangon's Shwedagon, has the world's largest stone dome built without supporting pillars. Entry is free, 09:00 to 19:00 daily. Ten-minute guided Anapana meditations run from 10:00 to 18:30 for ages 10 and over (in silence, phones off, so a fidgety seven-year-old will sit it out). No photos inside the main dome, and foreign visitors need ID. Reach it from Borivali station (west exit) by BEST bus 294 or 247 to Gorai Creek, then a ferry: Rs 5 one way locally, or Rs 50 return on the EsselWorld ferry. The last EsselWorld ferry to the pagoda leaves at 17:25.

Stay here if the pagoda is your main plan; you trade easy access to the mall's shops for a Gorai-side base, as its listing name points to Gorai. I can't give you room types or facilities, so confirm those directly with the property before booking. Official site ↗
When to go: seasons and festivals
November to February is the dry, sunny season and the easiest time for forest and pagoda days. The monsoon runs June to September, wettest in July, with flooding and cancelled boats. October stays hot and humid after the rains.
Festivals change the picture. Ganesh Chaturthi starts on 14 September 2026 and ends with immersion on 25 September; Juhu is one of the beaches, and about 84 major roads closed on immersion day in 2025. Navratri brings big ticketed garba nights in the suburbs, with Dussehra on 20 October 2026. Lakshmi Puja for Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. Holi in March means colour parties around Juhu, so wear old clothes and protect cameras.
Safety notes for families
- Emergencies: dial 112 for everything, 100 for police, 1091 for the women's helpline.
- Crowds and trains: pickpockets work buses, trains and crowds, and bag snatching from motorbikes occurs. Keep bags zipped and on the inside.
- Scams: touts target foreigners in tourist areas. Never leave drinks unattended.
- Weather: monsoon flash floods come with little warning, so check the IMD forecast.
- Beaches: many have no flags or lifeguards. Follow any lifeguard's instructions.
- Health: use repellent against dengue, malaria and chikungunya, especially after the monsoon. Drink bottled or filtered water. Air quality is poor from October to February.
- Respect: dress modestly at religious sites, and be careful photographing near stations and airports.
Money, booking and last reminders
Room GST is 5% up to Rs 7,500 a night and 18% above, so check whether your quote includes it. Compare more stays among Mumbai hotels and apartments.
One thing shoppers always asked me at the window was whether something would still look good a week later. Ask the same of a hotel room: judge it by how it works for you after three days with children, not by the first glance. Go in the dry season, pick your base by direction, carry the 112 number, and you'll be well prepared and in for a wonderful trip. Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking.
