Where to Stay in Shillong: 4 Hotels, WiFi Notes, Safety Tips

India

Overview
I'm excited to share Shillong, a hill city I'd happily plan a whole trip around. I spent years dressing department-store windows in Bengaluru, and I still read a place by how it is put together: where the lakes, museums, markets and viewpoints sit, and how far apart they are. My honest orienting note is that Shillong's sights are spread out, so your base matters more than usual. Below I cover getting around, the sights, the November festival, day trips and a safety section. I also pick four stays. One is by the airport, and the other three are 35 to 43 km from it. Three of them list free WiFi (in rooms at one, in public areas only at two), and I say which is which.

Getting There: Choose Your Base Before You Book the Taxi

Flights land at Umroi Airport, and from there you drive on to the city. (How long that drive takes swings with traffic and weather, so don't book a tight onward connection.) Shillong's sights sit in loose clusters, not one walkable core, so I choose a base by what I plan to do, not by amenities alone. If you want to compare more options first, our main listing of hotels in Shillong is a good starting point.

Stay here if you land late or fly out early. It's the airport-side pick, and you trade city-centre convenience for a 6 km hop from Shillong Airport. Rooms have a balcony, garden or mountain views, and a tea and coffee maker. The resort has an outdoor swimming pool, an outdoor fireplace, picnic areas, free on-site parking, room service and a tour desk. Breakfast is continental and Asian with local specialities, and special-diet menus are available. Umroi Lake and Shillong Peak are the nearby draws, with cycling on offer. (Treat 'nearby' as a drive on hill roads, not a stroll.) Safety note: it has private check-in and check-out. Tripadvisor reviews ↗

Getting Around: A One-Day Loop That Works

The easiest first day is Ward's Lake, Shillong Peak and Elephant Falls, all within a 12 km radius of the city centre. Add Police Bazar in the evening for food and local shopping. The design detail most people walk past in any market street is how the shopfronts are signed and lit. I go early, before the crowds, when you can still see the street instead of the people. (Don't plan to "do" all three sights before lunch. One could take an hour and another could swallow half a morning.)

  • Start with the viewpoint while the air is clear.
  • Save the falls for when you have energy for the steps.
  • Keep the bazaar for the end of the day.

The Falls-and-Peak Side: Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak

Elephant Falls has three layers, which you can see from different vantage points. The name comes from a rock that looked like an elephant, washed away in an earthquake in 1987. Flow is strongest from June to September. It is best done in sturdy shoes, since the steps can get slippery after rain. Shillong Peak is the highest point in the area, at 1965 metres. I'd base myself on this side if I wanted early, quiet starts at both.

Stay here for the falls-and-peak side of town. You trade Police Bazar strolls for early starts, since Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak are its listed neighbours. It is 43 km from Shillong Airport, so budget for a long arrival day. Family rooms have private bathrooms, balconies, mountain or city views, a TV and an electric kettle. The restaurant serves Chinese, Indian, local and Asian dishes at lunch, dinner and high tea, with halal and vegetarian options. Free WiFi is in public areas only, so expect lobby-and-terrace WiFi, not bedside. There is also a terrace, an outdoor fireplace, free on-site parking, room service and a tour desk. Safety note: the front desk is staffed 24 hours. Guests mention room cleanliness. See the guest house ->

Don Bosco Museum and the Cathedral: The Design Day

This is the day I'd save for rain. Don Bosco Museum is a seven-storey, hexagonal building with 17 galleries of tribal art, traditional attire, crafts and tools. It is in Mawlai, opens at 9:00 AM and is closed on Sundays. Go in the morning to avoid crowds. The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians is a short architecture-and-heritage stop that pairs well with it. What shoppers always asked me at the window was, "Will it look as good in daylight?" Ask the same of any museum photo.

Windermere Resort

Stay here if your days mix museums with screen time. It's the work-desk pick, and you trade airport proximity (it is 40 km from Shillong Airport) for room-level amenities. Spacious rooms include free WiFi, a work desk, a TV, parquet floors and a tea and coffee maker, with garden, mountain and city views. The family-friendly restaurant covers vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free needs, and there is an on-site bar. Breakfast can be served in the room, with room service, free private parking, bicycle parking and daily housekeeping. (Parquet looks lovely, but wood floors carry footsteps, so pack earplugs if you sleep lightly.) Safety note: security runs full-day. Hotels in Shillong with this kind of desk setup are rarer than you'd think.

Cherry Blossom Festival, 20 and 21 November 2026

If your dates are flexible, this is the event to plan around. The festival returns on November 20 and 21 at a new permanent home, the New Shillong Highland Grounds in Mahmawdkuk. That is roughly 30 minutes from central Shillong, so plan your ride back. Events start at 2:00 PM. Headliners include Khalid, Swae Lee and Boys Like Girls. Single-day tickets start at Rs 2,500 (roughly $30). It began in 2016 as a partnership between the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development and the Meghalaya government, which is science and culture sharing a stage. The wild Himalayan cherries bloom in October and November. I'd chase the blossom first and treat the concert as a bonus. It is under a month away, so book your bed soon.

Lakes and Boating: Ward's Lake and Umiam Lake

Ward's Lake suits walking and boating, and is a stop of under an hour. Umiam Lake, also called Barapani, is a short drive out of town. It offers boating, kayaking and photography. (Boat queues and weather decide how long you'll really spend here, so keep that afternoon loose.) During the bloom, the blossom is best seen free of charge around Ward's Lake and Lady Hydari Park. If your trip is more leisure than itinerary, a lake-leaning base keeps the days easy.

Lily Guest House

Stay here if your plans lean towards boating and easy leisure. You trade quick airport access for a position near boating activities, and it is 35 km from the airport. Rooms have private bathrooms with free toiletries, balconies, terraces and TVs, and family rooms are available. The on-site restaurant comes with a garden and terrace. Free WiFi is in public areas, so don't plan to work from the pillow. It also has free on-site private parking and room service, and airport shuttle is among its facilities. Staff speak Bengali, English and Hindi. Safety note: the front desk is staffed 24 hours, which helps after a late festival return. Booking.com listing ↗

Day Trips: Root Bridges, Mawlynnong and Dawki

The big day trip is south and west. A guided full-day Dawki excursion by car costs $162 per group of up to three and takes about 10 hours (roughly ₹14,000, so a long day with real driving). The Umngot River and Dawki Bridge are the highlights. Mawlynnong is paired with the Riwai Living Root Bridge, a short ten-minute trek. The root bridges are the part I find most interesting: living architecture made from the connective roots of rubber trees. For the Double Decker bridge, you trek down 3,500+ steps, which also means 3,500 back up.

Safety and Culture Notes

  • Footwear: sturdy shoes matter, because steps at the falls can be slippery after rain.
  • Long treks: the Double Decker trek is done with a local guide. Hire one, and carry water and a charged phone.
  • Connectivity: download offline maps before day trips. Don't rely on hotel WiFi once you're out on the road.
  • Festival nights: the venue is about 30 minutes out, so line up your return ride before you go. Organisers say the ground has multiple entry and exit points and a traffic management plan.
  • Respect: sacred groves such as Mawphlang are living cultural sites, not just scenery. Follow your guide's instructions.
  • Visitor desk: ask the Meghalaya Tourism visitor desk about current road conditions for your day trip and about festival transport.

Final Thoughts Before You Go

Choose your base by the day you most want, not by the fanciest photo. Pick the airport side for easy arrivals, the falls-and-peak side for early starts, a desk-and-WiFi room if you'll be working, or a lakeside-leaning stay for slow days. Shillong rewards the unhurried and the layered, so pack a jacket and flexible plans. Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking, and keep a late-night ride sorted. You'll be fine.
