Closing date for proposals will be December 7, 2018.
The Pervasive Technology Institute at Indiana University (PTI@IU) is launching a project to explore, advance, and develop evidence of the impact of the use of human resources—also known as "humanware"—to support and increase the use of cloud-based cyberinfrastructure (CI) by researchers in research university environments in North America. Funding from Microsoft Corporation supports the project.
Humanware describes the critical importance of people in the provision of CI supporting research in the twenty-first century —beyond just hardware, software, and advanced networks. Pioneered by Indiana University as far back as the 1990s, this concept is based on decades of experience and success in broad areas of leveraging IT support resources. The potential of humanware in aiding the successful use of CI was called out in the 2011 NSF Advisory Committee for Cyberinfrastructure Task Force on Campus Bridging.
PTI@IU is seeking a limited number of qualified individuals for roles as cloud research support engineers (CRSEs). A total of up to six awards will be made initially, with the potential for extension and expansion of the effort in 2019.
CRSEs who are selected will be supported in conducting project-specific efforts, via an honorarium of up to $2,000 per month, cloud-credits on Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform, and other funding to support project-related travel and events hosted on their campuses to engage researchers, faculty, and students.
Qualified candidates must be currently engaged in CI-supported research across any discipline at Carnegie-classified doctoral universities. Interested candidate CRSEs may get more information about applying at https://pti.iu.edu/outreach-training/crse.html.
