The Georgetown University Advanced Research Computing division and the Center for Continuing Education have created a certification program for computer systems administrators wanting to advance in the fields of high performance and high throughput computing.

The Advanced Research Computing division is also offering training in parallel and distributed programming. This will give students a full spectrum of high performance and high throughput computational training. These programs are designed to help workers develop the skills necessary to compete in this growing field. Training materials from these classes is available in a free online wiki.

"The goal behind these programs is to build a work force," says Arnie Miles, one of the instructors. "For the most part, universities are not providing this sort of training. And it does not necessarily require a 4-year degree to do this kind of work."

The Systems Administration Certification program consists of two required courses and a series of 1-2 day elective courses. The four-day Introduction to High Performance Computing is the required entry point to the program. Students with strong UNIX/Linux administration skills will complete this course able to manage a Beowulf cluster.

The Parallel, Distributed, and Grid Programming for High Performance and High Throughput Computing program requires an understanding of C, C++, or Java. Upon completing this course students will be able to create new code for parallel computing systems.
