Link of the week - Online learning: the International Winter School on Grid Computing

Can't make it to the 2008 ICEAGE International Summer School on Grid Computing in Hungary in July?

Why not study online instead? Enrolling in the summer school's winter incarnation: the online International Winter School on Grid Computing, which kicks off 6 February 2008 and runs until 5 March.

The International Summer Schools on Grid Computing-run by the ICEAGE project-were established in 2003 and have proven to be a great success, both for teaching staff and students.

Introducing numerous grid technologies through lectures and practical exercises, the summer schools are a unique gathering place for globally recognised grid computing figures from all over the world.

"[This summer school] has become a yearly reference point for grid computing, where the very best grid developers and scientists come and review the state of the art and teach an impressive audience of very smart students," says Fabrizio Gagliardi of sponsors, Microsoft Europe.

Winter online: distributed education for distributed computing

Comparable in commitment and scope with the Summer School, the Winter School provides a unique online educational opportunity.

The Winter School uses the materials created for ISSGC, making them available online for students who are unable to physically visit the summer school.

To maintain the sense of community and quality of presentations available, the Winter School will use a mix of live online events and recorded material, as well as providing support from many of the same tutors as were involved with ISSGC.

The Winter School will focus on three technologies-gLite, OGSA-DAI and Condor-and will boost students' capabilities for research and innovation through lectures by high-profile keynote speakers, invited especially for the occasion, as well as tutorials tailored to e-learning and forum and chat discussions.

Innovative approach and reusable materials

ISSGC material will provide Winter School students with wide access to lectures and tutorials run by some of the world's most recognised grid experts, all of which is stored in various audio-visual and textual formats in the ICEAGE Digital Library.

The Digital Library contains more than 7500 educational resources, and the Winter School curriculum is based on a representative selection of these materials, carefully hand-picked by leading authorities in the field.

Providing participation without geographical or temporal limitations, the school applies the philosophy of distributed computing directly to educational practice.
