Link of the week - eScience and Google Summer of Code
This summer marks the sixth edition of Google Summer of Code. Around 1000 student programmers from around the world will be offered a $5000 stipend to work with one of 152 open source mentor organizations, creating a substantial body of new open source code.
Last week Google announced this year's list of participating open source projects, and a number of them are closely tied with grids, clouds, or computer-assisted science.

ASCEND - A software program for solving small to very large mathematical models, including non-linear equations, linear and non-linear optimization problems, and dynamic systems expressed in the form of differential/algebraic equations.
Encyclopedia of Life - A single portal providing information on all 1.9 million known species by aggregating data from thousands of sites using novel informatics tools. Sponsored by the Marine Biological Laboratory's Biodiversity Informatics Group.
GenMAPP, Cytoscape, WikiPathways, and Reactome - A combined submission to Google Summer of Code by several different biological computing projects, these run the gambit from visualization and analysis of biological data to a curated database of core biological pathways.
Gephi - An interactive visualization and exploration platform for all kinds of networks and complex systems, dynamic and hierarchical graphs.
The Globus Alliance - Popular open source grid software used by a variety of grids across the world.
OAR - A resource manager, or batch scheduler, for large clusters.
Open Bioinformatics Foundation - A non-profit, volunteer-run organization focused on supporting open source programming in bioinformatics.
OpenNebula - An open source toolkit that aims to simplify the process of building infrastructure-as-a-service clouds.
Opticks - An extensible remote sensing and imagery analysis desktop application which provides a framework to process remote sensing data such as Hyperspectral, Multispectral, and Synthetic aperture radar imagery and video.
Parallel Global Multiobjective Optimizer (PaGMO) - Originally developed by the advanced concepts team at the European Space Agency for the automated design of interplanetary trajectories and spacecraft transfers, today the software provides a parallelization engine common to all algorithms through the 'generalized island model.'
Phyloinformatics Group at NESCent - NESCent, or National Evolutionary Synthesis Center, facilitates synthetic research in order to address fundamental questions in evolutionary biology. The phyloinformatics group aims to promote the open, collaborative development of reusable, interoperable, standards-supporting informatics tools.
Scilab - Created in 2003 by INRIA (the French national institute for research in computer science and control), the Scilab Consortium joined the Digiteo Foundation in July 2008. Together they aim to make Scilab the free reference for numerical computation.
Xen Cloud Platform - Xen is intended to serve as an efficient and secure standard for virtualization, and is currently in use by a variety of scientific projects.
