NIST invites comments on cloud computing

Last week, the US National Institute of Standards and Technology issued two draft documents on cloud computing for public comment, and launched a wiki where the cloud computing community can collaborate.

According to a NIST press release US Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra asked NIST to assist in accelerating the US government's secure adoption of cloud computing technology. The two drafts and the wiki site are part of that initiative.

The first and most basic of the two drafts is entitled, "A NIST Definition of Cloud Computing (NIST Special Publication (SP) 800-145)." NIST scientists are hoping for comments regarding how current the definition outlined in the draft remains. Comments should go to by 28 February 2011.

Comments on the second document draft, "Guidelines on Security and Privacy in Public Cloud Computing (SP 800-144)," should be sent to by 28 February 2011.

Finally, for information on NIST's cloud computing program, an up-to-date listing of cloud computing events, and access to the NIST-sponsored cloud computing working groups, you can register on their website here, and then access their wiki here.

To learn more about these calls for comments and collaboration, please read the NIST press release.
